WA's 'Porsche Kid' thief dies in custody

West Australian prisoner Bret Lindsay Capper, known as 'the Porsche Kid' after stealing a string of luxury cars in Perth in the 1980s, has died in custody while on remand.

Mr Capper, who had been released from his most recent prison term in 2014, was arrested in October after a week-long manhunt during which he allegedly carried out a series of assaults and armed robberies across Perth.

Mr Capper, 43, attempted suicide about 6pm at Hakea Prison last Tuesday, a Department of Corrective Services spokesman confirmed.
