Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says it is possible some of the officers who investigated the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee on Palm Island in 2004 might face criminal charges.

A top judge has says longer jails terms in New South Wales have not led to greater public safety.

The comments were made by the Chief Judge of the District Court, Justice Reg Blanch, in a speech to legal aid lawyers published this morning by Fairfax newspapers.

Elder died 'because of systemic racism'

An Aboriginal elder who died of heatstroke while transported in a Government-owned prison van died because of systemic racism in WA's justice system, according to the Aboriginal Legal Service and the man's family.
