Aboriginal Ward family get $3.2m payment for prison van death

THE family of an Aboriginal elder who died of heat-stroke in a prison transfer van have been awarded a $3.2 million ex-gratia payment by the State Government.

Mr Ward, an elder whose full name cannot be used for cultural reasons, died in the back of the van on the way from Laverton to Kalgoorlie in WA's Goldfields region in January 2008.

Prisoner transport changes following death

A parliamentary inquiry has heard prisoner transport company G4S has not implemented all the recommendations of an inquiry into the death of an Aboriginal elder in the Goldfields two years ago.

Mr Ward died of heat stroke after a four hour journey in the back of a searing hot prison van operated by G4S.

WA crime rate down, say police

WA's crime rate fell by 12.7 per cent last financial year with nearly 3000 fewer home burglaries, according to new figures released by WA Police today.

The statistics show the number of criminal offences reported in the 12 months to June 30 were on the decline, with only domestic assault climbing - up by 126 reported incidents.
